Antique French Ceramic Bed Warmer / Brique Chauffe-Lit

A fascinating piece of old French household history, this antique terracotta brique chauffe-lit was designed to bring a little warmth to cold beds long before central heating became commonplace.

These ceramic warming bricks were heated and then wrapped in cloth before being placed beneath the bedcovers. A wonderfully practical invention, particularly in draughty old French houses!
