Some things were simply too good to throw away.
Dating to around 1750, this beautiful French faïence platter from Rouen features a scalloped rim, delicate blue floral decoration and a wonderfully crackled glaze.
But my favourite detail is the old china riveting repair. Before modern adhesives, skilled craftsmen would drill tiny holes into broken ceramics and secure the pieces with metal staples. It meant treasured pieces could continue to be used rather than discarded.
Nearly 300 years later, that little bit of make-do-and-mend history is arguably just as lovely as the platter itself.
Dimensions: 46cm x 35cm
Pre-loved: Extensive age-related crazing, surface wear and a visible crack with historic metal staple repair. Recommended for decorative use only.
