A fabulous piece of French majolica by Sarreguemines, modelled as a ripe yellow melon with raised green leaves and a stalk-form handle. The tureen sits on its matching leaf-shaped platter, which really completes the look.
Sarreguemines became particularly well known for richly moulded majolica in the 19th and early 20th centuries, often taking inspiration from fruit, vegetables and the natural world. This is a wonderfully decorative example, with all the colour, texture and slightly theatrical charm that makes French majolica so collectible.
